Istanbul weather is classified as temperate Mediterranean, becoming maritime towards the northwest parts of the city. Local atmospheric zones arise due to the mountainous, coastal, and inland areas that all compose the geography of the city's expansive area. The winter and summer seasons merge, and as a result seasonal weather temperatures are quite subtle.
Istanbul weather is influenced by two opposing nautical winds, the northeasterly Poyraz wind, which transports cool air off the Black Sea, and the southwesterly Lodos wind, which makes available warm air from over the Mediterranean.

Spring
Istanbul weather during spring is characterized by warm sunny days, clear blue skies, and trees that are graced with wonderful green foliage. April and June are the best times to visit Istanbul, as the temperatures stand at above 20°C.
Summer
Summer weather in Istanbul is predominantly hot and dry, usually retaining a rather humid disposition. July and August are not only the hottest months of the year, but also the sunniest. Daily average temperatures hover around the 23 °C mark, with mercury occasionally taking a sharp ascent, soaring to around 30°C. Precipitation during these months is at a minimal level; during this time of the year, the city experiences a meager four days of rain, collecting just 30 mm of rainfall in total. Thunderstorms are exceptional, and though only occurring just 23 days out of each year, they tend to make their presence felt mostly in the summer and early autumn months.
Winter
Istanbul weather in winter is characterized by a lot colder and wetter conditions. December and January are the coldest months, with temperatures averaging between 5 °C and 8°C during the day and merging into frosty evenings. Subfreezing temperatures are experienced for 21 days of the year, with snow remaining for a few days after each snow fall. Daylight is minimal during winter often only for 3 hours per day. Precipitation levels during the months from November and January are between 80mm to 100mm.
Istanbul weather is quite foggy, and mainly during winter averaging about 228 days annually. Istanbul has an annual average of 124 days of rain, around 844 mm of annual precipitation.
